I got sick as I, for the first time ever, reached into another man's mind. No sense of Steve was there, not an echo. I shivered. There wasn't anything human in that darkness which buzzed around my mind. A woman's voice murmured from his thin lips. "Steve does not live here anymore."
It had been a cultured, British voice. There was something to it that said it came from another century, a completely different way of looking at life. An aristocratic, mature voice, whose tone said she was used to commanding and being obeyed. It had been totally devoid of compassion or mercy or humanity. And I was as scared as I could ever remember being. I didn't know what to do, so I just pretended that nothing out of the ordinary had happened.
"Good to see you up and about, Steve. I gotta get this blood to Casey in the Lab now."
"Oh, yes," calmly agreed the woman's voice from Steve's old face. "One of those injured drivers is a dentist. And dentists are so important to us. All those hoses in your mouth. All that Novocain. You humans never notice our blood pumping into your gums."
I forced a smile. "I didn't know you could impersonate voices, Steve. You should take your act out on the road. Me, I gotta go now. Casey's too pretty to keep waiting."
